Updates and Upcoming events...

Welcome to December!

Mark your Calendars:

  • Dec. 5-6 - Pick up days for Poinsettia orders
  • Dec. 9 - Scholastic orders due in order to secure delivery before the break.  Books make great gifts!
  • Dec.11 - Santa's Seconds Sale.
  • Dec. 12 - Band Concert
  • Dec 16, 17 & 18: Arts Rotations. Students will have the chance to visit three different grade 1 classrooms.  At each stop, students will have a visual art lesson tied to a holiday story.  They will make a holiday craft to bring home and share with you.
  • Dec 20th - Class celebration.  We will be celebrating the season by sharing a holiday snack together.  If you would like to contribute something to our celebration (veggies/dip, cookies, fruit, cheese and crackers, etc.) please sign up on the Google Doc to be shared shortly.  We love you parents, but grade 1 means that we will be partying on our own this year!
  • Dec 20th - School-wide holiday assembly and slideshow in the gym.  Please join us for the festivities, beginning at 1:00.  Please note, our class will not be performing this time.

Finally, here's your peek into the classroom!

We have been exploring the book "La chenille qui fait des trous", by Eric Carle as our inspiration over the past couple weeks.  This book lends itself quite well to the introduction of vocabulary around food.  Several times I overheard the kids saying that they were getting hungry with all the talk of food!

We made paper chain caterpillars, printing food vocabulary words on each link.  We practised reading the words with a friend and then chose 5 to read to Mme.  The kids really enjoyed this activity.  One student made a caterpillar taller that me!

We made shopping lists!  We went on a hunt for food words, chose the foods we would like to 'buy' and added them to our list.  We worked one on one with Mme to decode the list.

We made our very own version of Eric Carle's "Very Hungry Caterpillar".  Following the repetitive structure of the story, and adding visual supports made this big job appropriate for grade 1.

We introduced and played TIC TAC MOTS, as a way of practising our "mots outils".  This is an easy way to practise at home too!

We worked on the vowel E with the addition of accents.  We used the words the below to play a fun game of 4 in a row.  A copy of this game was sent home in the blue duotang as well.

We have been learning the days of the week, the months of the year and the seasons in French.  Here is a song we like to sing together (see video as well) !

We used the days of the week to complete a mini-book about making vegetable soup...YUM!

That's all for now!
