Sneak a Peek - Oct 14th

Hello Grade One Families,

I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving holiday weekend with plenty of good food and great company.

Not much in the way of housekeeping items this time.  If anyone would like to order Scholastic books this month, please submit your orders by the end of the week.

Here are some highlights from the last couple weeks in grade one:
We have been working hard at school, practising the words from our 1st Mots Outils card.  We like to use hands-on activities such as play d'oh, mini chalkboards, letter magnets and stamps to make learning our words more fun.  There are already a couple students who have mastered the first list and are on to #2 - Way to go!

We sorted colour words by letter shape to complete a mini-book about fall leaves.  We then practised reading our books to a friend and finally to Mme.

We made silly sentences with our farm animal vocabulary.  The children tried putting various puzzle pieces together to make silly sentences such as "Le cheval saute a la maison" et "Le chien nage a l'ecole". When they found one they really liked, they copied the sentence and illustrated.

We played a memory card game with farm animal vocabulary cards.

We sorted words by their predominant vowel sound.

We were word detectives, hunting for high frequency words hidden in a fall picture!

Together, we brainstormed all the things we have to be thankful for.  Next, we made cute turkeys with some of our ideas printed on their tail feathers.

In Visual Arts, we have been studying warm and cool colours.  We used this knowledge to make warm coloured fall leaves really stand out on a cool background.

Thanks for reading!
Mme Gallant
