A great start!

Hello Parents,

We are through our second week, and the children are doing a fantastic job adjusting to new routines and expectations here at school!

Every week or two, I will try to post to the blog in order to cover housekeeping items, and then share some photos of our classroom adventures.

Coming up! Please note...

Meet the teacher Night - An informal meet and greet
Wednesday, September 18th 4:30 - 6:30

Email Communication -
Please ensure that the school office has an accurate email address on file for your family. Most families would have provided one when registering their child for kindergarten. From time to time, we will be sending updates via email.

Library - We will be visiting the library each Thursday.  Children will be encouraged to choose one French and one English book.  Books are due back the following Thursday.

Carp Fair- Our class has been working hard to prepare some arts and crafts for submission to the Fair.  If you are visiting the Fair, be sure to look for them in the Junior department! Please look for an email coming to your inbox about attendance procedure if you wish to sign your child out to attend the fair next week.

Scholastic orders - Purchasing books through Scholastic is a great way to build your family library (especially in French!).  Books purchased through Scholastic earn our class reward points which are then used to add new and interesting titles to our classroom.  September orders are due by Monday, September 23, please.

School Photos - School photos will take place on September 26th - cheese!

Shoes: A gentle reminder that students will require a pair of indoor shoes to be kept at school.  Some of our students are requiring extra assistance to tie their laces.  If your child is not yet able to tie his/her shoes independently, please provide them with opportunities to practise at home.

Terry Fox Run - September 20th

Orange Shirt Day - September 30th

Homework -

Please look for a blue duotang coming home with your child tonight.  This is your child's language support duotang for the year.  This duotang should come back and forth to school in the ziplock bag with your child's agenda.

Sneak a Peek at our first two weeks!

Here are some highlights:We are learning vocabulary for school supplies and items found at school.  We got to design our own backpack and fill it with items of our choosing! Grade 1 students wrote the word and illustrated.  We learned a couple French songs to help us remember our new words (see links below!)

We enjoyed some "Pat le Chat" books.  We then made our own "Pat" the chat and chose something we like best about school.

We enjoyed table top "warm-up' activities each morning to get our brains and bodies ready for learning.

We are working on our endurance while reading independently.  Our goal is to reach 20 minutes of independent reading as a class.  We are off to a very good start, and were able to read almost 7 minutes already.  This means sitting quietly in a comfortable spot and READING (or looking at pictures and words) the whole time.

We made beautiful self portraits to display in the hall.  Can you spot your child?

We are reviewing letter names in French, with emphasis on the importance of vowels.  We  are working on 'squishing'  or 'sliding' two sounds together to make a syllable.  You will find a game in the blue duotang to practise this at home.

BBBBB AAAAAA = BA

Finally, I thought I would share some of the children's responses to the last question on our "Getting Acquainted" questionnaire.  I loved reading about your children and will certainly do my best to make their hopes a reality.

I hope my teacher...

... is kind
... takes good care of me at school
... never gets sick
... loves school
... doesn't give me any homeword
... let's us go on a field trip
... is wonderful
... teaches a lot about animals
... shows me how to read
... will give me a lot of homework
... is nice
... makes it fun
... lets us have popcorn parties
... will appreciate me
... will teach me new things
... brings bunnies in to school

Have a great weekend!

Mme Gallant
